Bruce Downing Retirement Celebration
On January 25, 2008 the Institute for Linguistics, English as a Second Language, and Slavic Languages and Literatures (ILES) held a celebration to honor Professor Bruce Downing and to mark the occasion of his retirement. The party began at 3:30 in Nolte lounge. Family and friends from near and far joined us to show their appreciation and affection to Bruce for his thirty-three plus years of service to the University of Minnesota, and to various other groups in the Twin Cities area. Over the years Bruce has been affiliated with the Southeast Asian Refugee Studies Project, (which became the Refugee Studies Center) as well as the Program in Translation and Interpreting here at the University of Minnesota.
The group was welcomed by Ray Wakefield, Interim Director of ILES, and we were also privileged to hear a few words from Jim Parente, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, as well as from Dr. Jeanette Gundel, Chair of the Linguistics program and long-time friend of Bruce. Tara Gibbs represented the graduate students with the presentation of paper drafts for a Festschrift to honor Bruce. A second graduate student, Sharon Gerlach sang the perfect song for Bruce, the words of the final verse being appropriately "personalized" to the delight of us all. The celebration continued, with a duet for violin and cello performed by Nobuko Davis (Linguistics graduate student) and her husband Frank. And finally, an impromptu vocal and banjo rendition from Philosophy professor, Michael Kac had us all in stitches.
Hooi Ling Soh, Linguistics Associate Professor, presented Bruce with a gift from the faculty and staff of ILES. We will miss Bruce, and we certainly wish him all the best for a long and happy retirement. See photos from the celebration.
(And now, a word of thanks from Bruce:)
To all my friends and colleagues:
I cannot thank you enough for all the kind words and generous gifts I have received from you as I retire from the Program in Linguistics. Most especially I want to thank everyone who participated in the amazing retirement event on January 25th. I was bowled over by the turnout, the food and drink, the speeches, the gifts, and the musical entertainments that were also gifts. It couldn't have been a happier or more enjoyable occasion, and I thank each and every one who came for making it such a memorable evening. The photos on this page attest to the good time we had. Many of you have told me how much you enjoyed the party-but no one more than I. What a way to go! Again, thanks to all, but not goodbye: I hope to see you all often in the future.
