2014 Undergraduate Presentations

Congratulations to our undergraduate students who will be presenting original research at conferences this spring! Carter Griffith (in conjunction with Professor Claire Halpert) will be presenting a paper titled "Post-Verbal CPs in North Azeri: new evidence of extraposition" at the 10th Annual Workshop on Altaic Formal Linguistics. Colette Feehan will be presenting a paper titled "An Optimality Theoretic Approach to Child Language Acquisition" at the Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium in April 2014.

2013 Greek Scholar of the Year

Congratulations to our student Chris Hammerly! Chris has been awarded Greek Scholar of the Year by the Interfraternity Council.

LSA 2014 Annual Meeting

Three of our Linguistics undergrads have been selected to give talks at the LSA 2014 Annual Meeting, held in Minneapolis this January.  Carolyn Spadine will be presenting “Circumstantial voice and aspect in Malagasy”, Andrew Hedding and Hannah Sande will be presenting “Geminates and weight in Amharic”, and Maria Stolen will be presenting “Fixed aspect in Amharic Conditionals” which she co-authored with Professor Claire Halpert.

Talle Family Scholarships (2013-2014)

Congratulations to our student Christopher Hammerly! Chris has been awarded a Talle Family Scholarship, which provides full tuition support for his senior year. Read more.

Selmer Birkelo Scholarship for 2013-2014

Congratulations to our undergraduate student Mary Elson! Mary was awarded the prestigious Selmer Birkelo scholarship for 2013-2014. The scholarship was awarded on the basis of academic merit, and only 18 students in CLA were awarded the scholarship for 2013-2014. The recipients receive up to $4000.

Scholarships (2012-2013)

Congratulations to our students Colette Feehan, Grace Doherty, and Maria Stolen! Colette was awarded a Renquist Scholarship and a Gold Merit Scholarship; Grace received a U Promise Scholarship, a Waller Scholarship and an Iron Range 4 Year Scholarship; and Maria received scholarships from the Lakselaget Foundation and the Sons of Norway Foundation to support her senior year abroad study in Norway.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (2012)

Our undergraduate student, Ethan Poole, has been awarded a highly competitive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, which provides three years of funding for graduate studies. The project that he proposed was to research the partitive Case in Northern Swedish (Nordsvenska) in comparison both to other dialects of Swedish and crosslinguistically to Finnish. Through studying this micro-syntactic variation in Swedish, Ethan hopes to gain insight into linguistic representations of aspect.

Carl Shepherd Memorial Fund (2012)

Our undergraduate student, Jørgen Sandstedt, has been awarded the prestigious Carl Shepherd Memorial Fund to conduct research at the Norwegian National Archive (Det Norske Riksarkivet) in Oslo.

The Workshop at 2012 ACM Web Science Conference (June 2012)

Our undergraduates, Kyle Marek-Spartz and Hannah Sande recently presented their paper with Paula Chesley at the Workshop at 2012 ACM Web Science Conference, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.Their paper was titled “Construction of the Gmane corpus for examining the diffusion of lexical innovations”.

The 6th Annual Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium (April 2012)

Jørgen Sandstedt recently presented his paper on Old Trøndermål Vowel Harmony at the 6th Annual Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium (April 21-22, 2012).

The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) (March 2012)

Two of our undergraduates, Hannah Sande and Jared Desjardins, recently presented their UROP research projects at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) (March 28-31, 2012), Weber State University, Odgen, Utah.  Hannah’s paper was titled “Nouchi: A Phonological Case Study of an Ivoirian French Creole”, and Jared’s paper was titled “Non-visible Gesturing in Telephone Conversation”. 

The Mobile App Challenge (2011-2012)

Undergraduate students in Linguistics, Kyle Marek-Spartz and Michael Burling, were part of a team that was recently selected as one of four finalists (out of 100 teams) in the Mobile App Challenge co-sponsored by the Office of Information Technology and the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP).  Their app helps a learner learn a language better by finding readings that match the learner’s level of proficiency. 

Selmer Birkelo Scholarship for 2011-2012

Two of our undergraduate students, Alatheia Yantz and Sherry Scarborough, were awarded the prestigious Selmer Birkelo scholarship for 2011-2012.  The scholarship was awarded on the basis of academic merit, and only 15 students in CLA were awarded the scholarship for 2011-2012.  The recipients receive up to $4000.

The 5th Annual Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium (April 2011)

Two of our undergraduate students, Ethan Poole and Yifei Wu, presented papers at the 5th Annual Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium (April 16-17, 2011), Ithaca, New York.  Ethan Poole’s paper was titled “Verb phrase pronominalisation in Mainland Scandinavian”, and the title of Yifei Wu’s paper was “Language contact between Chinese and English”.
