Undergraduate Program

Major Requirements:

Students must complete at least 120 credits to graduate, including at least 37 credits in the major. All majors must complete a common set of core courses, comprising basic analytic skills and three core areas of analysis. Additional classes may be chosen from two sets of electives. All required classes for the Major must be taken A-F.

1. Core Classes

  • LING 3001 or LING 5001: Introduction to Linguistics
  • LING 3601/5601:Historical Linguistics OR a course in the history of a language
  • LING 4002: Linguistic Analysis
  • LING 5201: Syntax I
  • LING 5302: Phonology I
  • LING 4901W: Senior Project or LING 3051/3052V: Honors Thesis

2. Elective Classes

In addition to the core classes, 18 elective credits, 9 from each of the following two groups.

A –Advanced Electives
  • LING 5202: Syntax II
  • LING 5303: Phonology II
  • LING 5105: Field Methods I
  • LING 5106: Field Methods II
  • LING 5205: Semantics
  • LING 5206: Pragmatics
B – Other electives
  • Any three courses with a LING designator.
  • No more than 3 credits may be at the 1xxx level.
  • Up to 6 of the minimum 9 credits from group B may be taken in an allied discipline, subject to approval by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Minor Requirements:

The Minor program must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. All required classes for the Minor must be taken A-F

  • Ling 3001
  • Ling 4002
  • Ling 5201 or 5302
  • Two additional LING courses.
