The Masters Program requires 32 credits total, including 6 credits in a related field. Required coursework in the major includes courses in phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, and field methods. Other coursework is selected in consultation with the student's adviser.
Same as for the master's degree plus an additional 6 credits in related fields and an individualized plan of study of approximately 12 additional credits (including at least 3 8xxx courses in Linguistics) to be determined in consultation with the student's committee. All Ph.D. students must pass preliminary written examinations in phonology, syntax, and their primary and secondary areas of concentration. Papers judged to be of publishable quality by the student's committee can be substituted for examination questions in any of these areas.
For the M.A. degree, knowledge of one language not native to the student is required. For the Ph.D. degree, knowledge of two languages not native to the student is required.
For students majoring in other fields, the minor requirements for the M.A. degree, requires 3 courses: 5001, 4002, and either 5201 or 5302 . For the Ph.D. degree, six courses are required. These include the three courses required for the M.A. minor plus 3 additional courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.
