Graduate Program Admissions

No specific B.A. degree is required, but students admitted to our program normally have a broad undergraduate background that includes some linguistics courses. The application requirements are 3 letters of recommendation, GRE scores, TOEFL scores for international students, and a Supplementary Questionnaire included in our application packet. Applicants wishing to be considered for fellowships should apply no later than Jan. 15 of the preceding academic year.

Our program offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Linguistics. We welcome applications for Fall Semester, which begins in September each year. Applications for Spring Semester from students who have not already been admitted to the University of Minnesota graduate school will be considered only under special circumstances and if there is room. The appropriate forms for application to our program include the Application for Admission form and the Supplementary Questionnaire for Graduate Program Applicants form. The Applications for Admission form should be completed online and returned to the Graduate School, together with all Graduate School requirements by our deadline of March 15, for the year in which you are applying.

In addition to the general Graduate School requirements, our program requires three (3) letters of recommendation, official GRE scores, official TOEFL scores (for all non-native English speakers), and the Supplementary Questionnaire for Graduate Program Applicants form.
